Zambia
|
Zambia lies landlocked in southern Africa and is slightly smaller than
the UK and France combined. In spite of its size, Zambia has a
population of only 10.5 million, of which 47 % are under 15 years of
age. Although the country has phenomenal sights, like the spectacular
Victoria Falls or the beautiful
Lower Zambezi, tourism started later
than in many other African countries. |

The number of tourists seems to increase steadily since the demise of Zimbabwe’s tourism industry,
although it's still comparably low compared to East and South Africa.
The safari industry pioneered walking safaris and does its best to learn
from the mistakes of its neighbours. So there are many conservation
projects, that support local communities. Around Zambia's great rivers you find attractive national parks, with
Kafue and South Luangwa
being the most popular. |

Travelling through Zambia is safe, but takes time: distances are long
and road conditions bad. Apart from Lusaka and the main towns in the
Copperbelt, the rural areas have a low population density. The
country retains large tracts of wilderness, like Liuwa Plains or the
remote North Luangwa. It is deepest, darkest Africa and remains one of
the world’s poorest countries with a major national debt, a weak
currency, but very pleasant people. |
