Lower Zambezi National Park
|
The Lower Zambezi Valley, from
the Kariba Dam to the Mozambique border, has a formidable reputation for
big game. The Lower Zambezi National Park protects a large section
of the Zambian side of the valley and lies opposite of the famous Mana
Pools National Park in Zimbabwe. It's elephant country, that is
dominated by the mighty Zambezi River and one of the most scenic
national parks I've ever been to!

The park, made up of higher ground on
the sides and on top of the escarpment, is thick bush, that makes game viewing
more difficult than in plains areas of other parks. Stay around the
Zambezi and its sidearms, as the game concentrates here during the dry
season (June – Oct), which is the best time to visit. As you
might expect, the game densities increase as you travel east, with the
best game in the national park and fewer animals on the privately owned
land closer to Chirundu.

Game drives, walking safaris,
fishing, and canoeing are the main
activities in and around the park. The walking safaris take place in the
buffer zones around the park and offer a different perspective and a
great way to get very close to elephants. You are accompanied by a professional guide and
an armed scout. Canoeing is another adventurous way to
explore the wilderness, especially when you canoe around yawning hippos
or crocodiles
