Kampala

Uganda’s capital Kampala is the country’s social and economic hub. People say, that it has developed enormously since the takeover of Museveni in the eighties. Today it’s a thriving, modern place with good infrastructure, excellent restaurants and well stocked shops and markets. The city is green and verdant. Especially the outer suburbs still come across more like an overgrown village than a capital city. One of the best aspects of  Kampala is that it’s pretty safe by comparison with the likes of Nairobi or Dar es Salaam.

I'm definitely no fan of big African cities, but if you seek a taste of urban Africa, Kampala is probably one of the more beautiful towns with warm-hearted and friendly people! Kampala has a population of 1.2 million (according to a census of 2002) and doesn’t have real sights apart from Kasubi Tombs or the Uganda Museum. To me it was worth visiting the vibrant city markets or the harbour in Ggaba that offers access to the legendary Lake Victoria.

The worst thing about Kampala is surely its chaotic traffic. During rush hour it can take hours to break out the gridlock of Nakasero. Visit the minibus-taxi stations around Namirembe Road and you’ll experience complete chaos
J ! So I was pretty happy to escape into the bush.
